Writing is, in the end, the act of giving something a form. It is not a matter of letting thoughts flow as they are, but of enclosing them and giving them meaning. Yet in that process, much disappears. The sentence that first came to mind was too long, too direct, or perhaps too vague. I rewrite it again and again. I replace words, refine sentences, and sometimes erase an entire line. In the end, through revising and revising again, I gradually bring the writing to completion.

Yet what is written does not always retain the same meaning. When I return to a sentence after time has passed, it feels like the memory of a stranger. Although I know the words are mine, the feelings behind them have faded, while the sentences I erased return only vaguely. Perhaps writing does not preserve memory intact, but merely creates a place for it to remain. In that place, the self who wrote and the self who reads sit facing each other as different people.

I alter my memories little by little, until what remains is a sentence entirely different from what first occurred to me. I place a pencil. The pencil, lightly touched by my fingertips, has no intention of moving yet. Once it begins to draw a line, it will start moving toward an end. But I have not decided where that end should be. Not knowing how far the pencil must go, I remain quietly still.

I continue to write. Speech disappears, but writing remains. I have always lived with a sense of the transience of words spoken aloud. Words that hold the emotions of a moment eventually vanish. They scatter into the air and never return. Writing, however, is different. Once it is inscribed on paper, it is not easily forgotten, even as time passes. The letters that leave my fingertips stand in for memory.
